Competition from banks, mortgage brokers, online lenders and the in-house mortgage companies of national real estate franchises and local real estate powerhouses has succeeded in virtually shutting out credit unions as a lender choice.

While the push toward house hunting as a pre-approved buyer has helped to make the credit union the first step along the path to home ownership, the Realtor is still the single most influential source of information and direction to most home buyers and sellers and has a great deal of impact in helping clients select their mortgage lender.

Enter CU Realty

CU Realty of VA, MD, DC and WV, LLC was established in May 2004 as a credit union service organization (CUSO) offering comprehensive real estate brokerage services. Its goal is to help credit unions throughout these Mid-Atlantic states capture first mortgage business by forging alliances with experienced local real estate professionals.

To this end, the CUSO has partnered with CU Realty Services, a licensed real estate company, to offer expanded real estate services and significant cash rebates to members of participating credit unions.

CU Realty Services' innovative web portal allows credit union members to establish the value of their property, search properties for sale from the local multiple listing service, view photos of homes for sale, see neighborhood maps, obtain school, crime and demographic reports and choose an "Approved Agent" to represent them throughout their transaction.

  • Approved Agents guide buyers and sellers through the process and advocate credit unions as the first option for obtaining financing.
  • Members benefit from a wealth of data and information at their fingertips plus a rebate on both their sale and purchase when using an Approved Agent.
  • Moreover, these Approved Agents are local market experts hand-selected by the CUSO to work in tandem with participating credit unions. They, in turn, are eager to work with motivated, well-informed, often pre-approved buyers and sellers and fund the rebate.
  • Participating credit unions enjoy higher mortgage lending volumes through positioning as a one-stop real estate resource for first-time and repeat home buyers.
